The Reckoner is the award-winning student newspaper of Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. During the school year, The Reckoner publishes regularly on its website and produces a monthly printed newspaper which is distributed to the school community. The organization is comprised entirely of dedicated student volunteers: some of the best writers, artists, photographers, designers, and developers of the school. In 2016, the organization was named Ontario’s Best High School Electronic Newspaper and Ontario’s Best High School Volunteer Newspaper by the Toronto Star. To view the previous guards, click any of the links below:
× Bridget Huh Bridget Huh is the Editor-in-Chief of The Reckoner. She spends an alarming amount of time writing poetry that is, according to her critics, "sexually frustrated". She takes 30 grams of peanut M&Ms daily (prescribed by herself) to treat her moderately severe depression. If she were to describe herself with the lyrics of one song, that song would be "Handsome Devil" by The Smiths.
Adil HaiderEditorial Manager
× Adil Haider Adil Haider is the Editorial Manager for The Reckoner, and he’s just as surprised as you are. His greatest achievements include starting the Significant Digits column and taking on too much administrative responsibility. Although he’s very busy trying to keep his half dozen clubs functioning, Adil is always available to discuss, argue, or cry with, though beware, about 50% of his conversations are set ups to puns. He is easily identifiable in the halls by his massive headphones, massive eyebags, and constant stream of opinions. His great passions in life are tea, research, and the sound of his own voice.
Andrew LiDirector of Print Development
× Andrew Li Andrew Zou Li is the Director of Print Development at The Reckoner. He started his journey in graphic design and formatting through complex surreal photo manipulation and has now progressed to the abstract art of drawing small rectangles on a larger newspaper rectangle. Andrew describes this growth as "revolutionary and inspirational", stimulated by the profound influnece of elementary geometry and not a lack of time to create anything more sophisticated. Although he occasionally misses the days where he could draw his imagination for hours on end, Andrew would much rather design a paradise where the imagination of the entire newspaper staff can flourish.
Jacqueline HuoNews Manager
× Jacqueline Huo Jacqueline Huo is the News Manager of The Reckoner. She doesn’t know the meaning of the words “free time” but if she had any, she would spend it binge-watching The Office and browsing through dog memes on Instagram. She spends a large part of her day waiting for the bus, which never seems to come on time. In class, she can be found frantically finishing her homework as the teacher collects, cramming for her test the next period, or catching up on sleep. Jacqueline has an extensive hoodie collection, and a mild obsession with the band Family of Things.
Jennifer YuOutreach Manager
× Jennifer Yu Jennifer is the Outreach Manager on The Reckoner. A lover of all things Disney, she often finds herself re-watching childhood Disney movies and shows. In her free time, she loves to paint with her favourite songs or shows playing in the background for inspiration.
Justin YeDeputy Editor-in-Chief, Photography Manager
× Justin Ye Justin is the Reckoner’s Deputy Editor in Chief and Photography Manager. Although he wishes he was asleep right now, Justin is probably somewhere studying for his test next period or working on a not-nearly-enough-done project. When he’s not busy working (procrastinating), Justin is an avid follower of the NBA and enjoys cross country running, swimming, and Ultimate Frisbee himself. He also loves to cook, and is especially fond of noodles and potatoes. Justin struggles with writer’s block: while he is comfortable developing elaborate introductions for his work, he never knows how to properly end a paragraph.
Lauren LiuIllustrations Manager
× Lauren Liu Lauren Liu is the Illustrations Manager at the Reckoner. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, playing basketball, and playing the French horn. She is a hardworking person at heart but she can also be a procrastinator at times. Besides school work and extracurricular activities, she can be found reading a good novel, eating yummy food, or watching many movies and television shows on Netflix. In the future, she hopes to travel more often and learn more from experiences that are yet to come.
Roger LiLife Manager
× Roger Li Roger likes adding risky creative flairs to everything he does: odd assignments, pictures of squirrels riding dogs, and flavoured text messages (which happen way too often). Roger tends to take on more than he can handle. Once, he was tasked with writing a biography in a hundred words. Roger got attached to his ideas - a dating profile, an irrelevant story, etc - and a hundred words became irrevocably insufficient. Another instance is when he agreed to be Life Board manager. Constantly overwhelmed, he deems everything to be a tomorrow problem. If you’re ever asked for texting advice, beware of second-hand anxiety.
× Adeena Ali Adeena Ali is a Grade 12 writer for the Life Board. You’ll find her heavily stressing from dreadful deadlines or ecstatic from finally finishing an assignment after spending an all-nighter. But academics aren’t everything to her, mind-blowing facts, cool advertisements and the newest out-of-this-world fantastical novel are just some of the things that she greatly enjoys.
× Aimee Li Aimee Li, a BMW driver since day one, is a writer for the Life board on The Reckoner. She enjoys leeching off of her friend’s Spotify premium, laughing too hard at her own jokes, and not knowing when to shut up. If she’s not binge-listening to murder podcasts then she’s probably off somewhere making TikToks. She WILL complain about absolutely anything to absolutely anyone, so if you see her in the hallway, walk away as fast as you can. She would rather be caught dead than with a completed homework assignment in her hand.
× Ajita Kanthathasan Ajita Kanthathasan is a member of Garneau’s Illustrations board. She honestly has no idea what she is or will be doing in life, but finds that working hard at what she’s passionate about works pretty well for now. She tends to be all over the place, never doing less than three tasks at once. She’s introverted and a tad bit shy, but once you get to know her you won’t know how to get rid of her. Her friends and family mean the world to her, and she could not imagine surviving without their love and laughter.
Akil Miki Huang
× Akil Miki Huang Akil Huang is a member of the Reckoner's Editorial Board. He writes under the Fashion Column in a collaborative effort with the Garneau Fashion Club, an emerging collective dedicated to providing the most refined opinions on current fashion news. You will often find him scouring the web to uncover tasteful style tips or researching up-and-coming brands to feature in his Fashion Club PowerPoints. If you see him in the halls or in lectures, don’t be afraid to start a discussion, or ask him about his knit collection!
× Akshaya Varakunan Akshaya is a writer for the Life board at the Reckoner, but she uses memes as her prime form of communication. She can usually be seen in her grey hoodie, inhaling bubble tea, and dabbing - which, by the way, looks just as strange as it sounds. When attempting to approach her, keep in mind that she’s either half-asleep or high on taro milk tea. In any case, as you can probably tell, she’d appreciate some help in getting her life together. If she had her life together, this biography would be far more interesting.
× Allan Li Allan Li is a Grade 9 photographer for The Reckoner. Although his photography skills are a work-in-progress, he loves shooting photos whenever he can. Outside of school, Allan enjoys drinking bubble tea while binge watching Hell’s Kitchen, especially when Gordan Ramsay gets mad at the chefs (In fact, Gordan is his icon)! Aside from this, Allan is very determined to sharpen his skills and hopes he can contribute considerably to The Reckoner this year!
× Allyson Wu Allyson Wu is a member of the Outreach Board at the Reckoner. During her free time, she can usually be found listening to music on Spotify, binging Youtube, or curled up with a book. Her current aspirations include becoming more fluent in Mandarin, improving her messy handwriting, and figuring out how to finish all her homework while getting a socially acceptable amount of sleep(a truly challenging task). She also constantly has earbuds in, but if you see her, please say hi - she loves making friends!
× Amanda Tian Amanda Tian is a writer for the Life Board who made this bio at 1:29 a.m. two days after it was supposed to be submitted. She’s so sleep deprived that she’s starting to hear colours and will maybe update her bio at a later date (but not now because she wants to go to bed).
× Amy Jia As a part of both the Life and Outreach boards, Amy Jia fills her already busy schedule with a balanced combination of food, procrastination, internet, laughter, and books. Although she loves to write, Amy often finds herself staring at a new document as empty as her storage for creative ideas. When she’s at home, Amy can typically be found rooting through the kitchen for snacks, or browsing through her phone in a never ending search for memes.
× Amy Li Amy is a writer for the News Board at the Reckoner. She enjoys daydreaming, listening to music, exploring, making puns and playing competitive croquet. She constantly experiments to find the optimal way to procrastinate but then wonders why all her work creeps up on her last minute. When nothing interesting is happening her head will slip into the clouds, but saying anything crazy or about ducks will quickly get her attention. She is also a top-secret FBI agent so if you ever need any information she will gladly assist you, just keep it lowkey, it’s top-secret after all.
× Amy Long Amy Long is a Life Board Artist for The Reckoner. She can typically be found rushing her projects last minute or drawing to distract herself from her responsibilities. She wrote her bio for The Reckoner the day before it was due which says a lot about her. Amy is in the grade with 2 other Amys, but you can differentiate her from the others easily because she’s infinitely more awkward to talk to.
× Andrew Liang Andrew is a middling student just trying to get by. When not working on some project or other (roughly half of which are "productive"), he can be found doing a host of things—playing guitar, listening to music, writing, or doing "contest math"—all of which he enjoys very much. His current goal in life is to become "successful", but other milestones that feature prominently include figuring out how to fall asleep in two minutes and trying to calculate how much uni's going to cost him.
× Andrew Wu Andrew Wu is a member of the Reckoner’s Sports Board. He is a curious student who loves doing math, playing the violin, shooting hoops with his friends, and preparing mouth-watering dishes for those close to him. When the time is right, Andrew may also be found playing casual games of bridge, listening to his Spotify playlists, or taking nice long naps. He aspires to do meaningful things in life, but currently, he is just a student on a long journey trying to balance his life with his tedious work.
× Angela Xu Angela Xu is a grade nine photographer for the Reckoner. As the professional procrastinator that she is, she started writing this the night before it was due. She enjoys many activities including petting puppies, eating bread, and playing word blitz, all of which she did while putting off writing this bio.
× Anirudh Goel Anirudh Goel is a grade 10 writer for The Reckoner’s Significant Digits board. He usually starts his day off by trading a workout for an extra hour of sleep. He loves listening and "dancing" to music or lip syncing in the mirror. You can often find him either be seen fixing his uncooperative hair or enjoying his daily serving of bananas. Sporting a sick collection of accents, he sure isn’t afraid to be himself. Expect a fun time whenever you're around him. Feel free to dm him on Instagram at @anirudhgoel_
× Annie Xiong Annie is a writer for the Life Board. Her day job is being a full-time student at Marc Garneau, but by night she is the leader of a cult who worships chinese bread and mango green bubble tea. During her spare time she likes to challenge her friends to a game of Word Blitz, by which will inevitably lead to said friends stealing all her trophies and leave her in a dejected state about her lack of spamming skills and fast wifi.
× Bahir Latif Bahir Ali Latif is a member of the news board at The Reckoner. It is his first year at the school and he is a really passionate student. He loves playing soccer(who doesn't), ultimate frisbee and volleyball in his spare time and is enthusiastic about being a part of all the awesome clubs at the MGCI. He sets high goals to get into Aerospace at UofT, and really wants to put in a lot of effort in his studies, yet often procrastinates and wonders how he manages to slip away every time!
× Bilal Bartaai Hey, peeps! My name is Bilal Bartaai and I’m one of the several photographers of the Reckoner this year. I go by many names such as Billy, Billy Bartai, Billy Bobby Barti, Billy Booby Brown, or Barti B. Take your pick or create an entirely new one! I enjoy taking photos (duh), drinking bubble tea, wearing Hawaiin shirts, and waiting for the last second to do all my assignments. This year, the team and I will do the absolute most to get you the best and most aesthetically pleasing pics to go along with your reading. I can’t wait to see what this year brings!
× Brenan Srisatkuru Brenan Srisatkuru is a Grade 10 writer for The Reckoner’s Sports Board. He is a former AA baseball player and an avid fan of more sports than letters in his last name. When he is not studying, playing Fortnite or eating dinner at 11pm, he can be found warming the benches at school volleyball games. Among many others, his other pastimes include leaving people on read and never picking up his phone. If you ever want to strike up a conversation about sports or really anything, feel free to DM him. Or maybe not.
× Carrie Jiang Carrie Jiang is a member of the Outreach Board for The Reckoner. She is a grade nine student currently attending Marc Garneau CI. She is an active member of the community and loves being involved in activities that are both in and out of school. Carrie enjoys playing many different instruments, such as the piano and cello. Some of her favourite sports include dragonboating and volleyball. And of course, her favourite thing to do is binging Netflix shows, especially FRIENDS. Carrie hopes to help Reckoner fundraise as much as possible so it can have many prints for the school year.
× Catherine Zheng Catherine is a significant digits columnist and a part of the print board. She likes resolving to her group members that she'll finally do a smaller part of the group project but always ends up doing most of it anyway. She also enjoys picking up centipedes and spiders but is deathly afraid of fruit flies. So no matter how tough and manly she may try to be, just remember the fruit flies.
× Cheng Peng Chen Peng is a sportswriter for The Reckoner’s Sports Board. When he isn’t notoriously napping in class (out like a light), he can be seen avidly chatting with his peers on utterly extraneous subjects. Being the couch potato that he is, his favourite pastime is chilling on his phone while sitting on any comfortable surface. And although he loves watching sports games like basketball and football, his fear of moving a muscle has been limiting his athletic ambitions.
× Colleen Chang Colleen Chang is a grade 9 illustrator for The Reckoner, who is currently working towards ending her chronic procrastination and sleep deprivation. She enjoys swimming, drawing, and stressing about whether or not she's failing her french classes. In her free time, her schedule consists of binging Netflix for an unhealthy amount of time, and painting random things she saw on her social media feed. Nice to meet you 🙂
× Conner Lee Conner Lee is a writer in Editorial Board. He enjoys debate, chess, and avoiding exercise at all costs. He does not like photos, icebreakers, and the systematic oppression of the bourgeoisie to keep their means of production. When talking to a Conner, don’t prompt him on human rights or philosophy issues, he’ll start giving his opinion although nobody asked for it. For the sixteenth year in a row, Conner’s goal is to finish his assignments on time and stop procras-
× Cynthia Wang Cynthia is a tenner in the Life and Sig Dig boards. She is the living embodiment of confusion and panic. She also really likes cake. You can find her in the library during her spare, either crying in a corner over math homework or ranting about the superiority of Minecraft bees to any other mob. Approach with caution. Unless you have cake.
× Daniel Neagu Daniel Neagu is a writer for the Life Board. When he’s not late for school, it’s because he’s still asleep. At lunch, Daniel can be found often scolded by Jimmy the hot dog vendor because he forgot to order his spicy Italian sausage in advance. In his free time, he enjoys carrying the volleyball team, sleeping through his twenty-hour bus ride home, and waking up at the wrong stop. One word to describe Daniel with would most likely be an adjective, of which there are certainly some.
× David Walji David is an Editorial writer for the Reckoner. He is a procrastinator at heart and cherishes the little sleep he gets. He can often be found sipping bubble tea while staring at his screen blankly, unsure about how to respond to his DMs or trying to understand memes too complex for his brain. He is very proud of being able to devour an entire large pizza without help and he enjoys the simpler things in life—doing goat yoga, rambling on and on, spending time with his friends, or starting sentences he doesn’t know how to—rock-climbing.
× Dawson Teu Dawson is part of the Web and App Development Board of the Reckoner. His daily routine consists of eating, sleeping (less than he would like), doing homework, and being glued to various screens. In his free time he enjoys starting at a computer screen for several hours hoping that a coherent program comes out, which he calls programming. He also enjoys watching Netflix for far longer than is recommended or healthy. Some of his favourite things are motor racing, untoasted plain white bread, and strips of bacon that have been cooked for several minutes too long.
× Derek Nguyen Derek is a Grade 10 student and part The Reckoner’s Editorial Board. His favourite music largely consists of Chopin and poetic Minecraft parodies. While he enjoys listening to the piano, he isn’t all that great at playing it. He enjoys reading science-fiction and fantasy novels but still reads the odd non-fiction here and there. While he doesn’t have a favourite book, his least favourite is easily Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
× Dylan Xiao Dylan Xiao is a News writer at The Reckoner. He is known for making witty puns and his endless knowledge about roasting turkeys. Although Dylan is from the south, he rarely wears a jacket and almost never gets cold. He can often be found watching sports highlights and cheering for any team from Texas or Florida except for the Miami Dolphins. Be wary of giving him your personal belongings because he will probably drop them by accident.
× Elliot Ngo Elliot Ngo is a Grade 9 member of the Print Development Board and the Sports Board of the Reckoner. While most of his life is spent looking at a computer screen, he also enjoys swimming, reading, sleeping, and watching random sports highlights. Generally you can find him browsing the internet while procrastinating.
× Emily Lai Emily Lai is a writer for the News and Life Boards of The Reckoner. In her spare time, she plays piano, reads classic novels, and laments about having no spare time. In another life, she imagines herself living quietly in the countryside with an abundance of good tea, books, and plenty of trees to read under. In her spare time, she can probably be found trying to understand new abbreviations found on social media.
× Emily Liu Emily Liu is an artist and writer for the Life Board, as well as an Illustrator. She likes reading in her free time, as well as browsing the internet and playing video games. She can often be found on her armchair, in a position that will likely give arthritis once she is old. Sometimes, she can make nice banana bread. She enjoys long walks, and swims regularly to stay sane. Every so often, she plays the ukulele, and badly sings along.
× Eric Zhao Eric Zhao is part of the Life Board and Photography Board at The Reckoner. Eric Zhao is a life and photography enthusiast. He is also a video games enthusiast, but he doesn't like to talk about it.
× Erica Yip Erica Yip is a member of the Outreach Board in the Reckoner. Her interests include listening to music, calligraphy and watching YouTube videos. You can find her Spotify for inspiration but remember that only 4 out of the 25 secretive playlists that she has made are shown. She also only does calligraphy on the various worksheets given to her during class and if she is not being productive, you can catch her watching David Dobrik vlogs or funny moments gaming videos.
× Evan Woo Evan is a member of the Photography Board. He has found a new love for playing the guitar and binging The Good Doctor. This year, Evan aspires to become better at photography and TikTok dances. He has tried to get better at having breakfast before school, and when he does, his method of culturally preparing cereal with milk first has not changed.
× Evelyn Jiang Evelyn is a news writer and photographer for The Reckoner. if you spot her in the hallway, she will most likely be either watching Youtube videos on her phone or crying about her math average. She aspires to one day wake up early enough in the morning to eat breakfast and prepare a lunch for herself, but it is turning out to be much harder than she had originally thought. Clearly, Evelyn also has difficulty smiling for pictures.
× Hateem Fatima Hateem Fatima is a member of the Print development and Life board at The Reckoner. If she isn’t laughing about her latest joke, then you can probably catch her embarrassing her friends with her wild personality. Or bopping to all things related to EXO, - that too. If you see her around the halls, don’t be shy to say hi. 🙂
× Helen Sun Helen Sun is an Illustrator at the Reckoner. She has an arbitrary set of likes and interests, such as: the colour yellow, bridge, biology, podcasts, pop art, and book prose. She can be found losing her mind over the motion blur functions in her art program. Current concern: everyone around her seems to be developing god-like handwriting and she desperately wants in.
× Henry Ren In the daytime, I’m Henry Ren. Just a normal guy with a normal life. But there’s something about me that no one knows yet, ‘cause I have a secret. Another day, I’m back at school. I think about math, god damn I’m failing. Teachers look at me, I look away, but do they see me anyway? Oh-oh-oh marks are going down. Oh-oh-oh I’m not passing this class. And when the sun goes down, that’s when I go to… Procrastinate! Three hours left! Help me I don’t know anything on the test! Procrastinate, not the luckiest! The power of sleep, always so strong! Please support me on Patreon. You can find the full song on Spotify or iTunes.
× India India writes for both the Life and Editorial boards at the Reckoner. She is a writer who writes what she reckons and a reckoner who reckons herself a writer. When bored, India likes to represent the essence of dysfunctionality. She also enjoys taking breaks, raiding cupboards, and talking a lot without saying anything at all.
× Ivy Lin Ivy Lin is a member of The Reckoner's Web and App Development. Ivy enjoys playing birdge (and losing) while draining all of her allowance on bubble tea. She used to consider herself a very indecisive person but she's not so sure anymore. When she isn't using all of her cellular data scrolling through TikTok, she can be found sleeping on a nearby surface or binging the latest episodes of Greys Anatomy. If you ever want to expand your Netflix addition, she'll be happy to help.
× Jefferson Chen Jefferson Chen is a writer for the Editorial Board of The Reckoner and in his sophomore year of high school. Outside of writing, he usually finds himself forced into an endless cycle of studying and sleeping - the two things he finds himself needing the most of. Usually, he enjoys meeting new people and (like everyone else) playing video games. Most notably, he can be considered a reliable expert at putting the "pro" in "procrastination".
× Jeffrey Cheung Jeffrey is a Grade 10 student and a member of the Print Development Board at The Reckoner. Hobbies of his include collecting funky rocks, listening to pre-2014 Minecraft parodies, and experiencing real human emotions. A large part of his personality is defined by the fact that he’s an Aries and that he listens to Edgy Music That You’ve Probably Never Heard Of. If you ever catch him running on over 4 hours of sleep, he’s almost tolerable.
× Jessica Guo Jessica Guo is a senior writer for the News Board on The Reckoner. She is in Grade 12 and after three years at MGCI, is still trying to figure out which incentives will get people to walk to Eglinton with her. (Offering people food from Tim’s has proven to be the best approach so far.) She loves listening to music and hopes that her future financial status will allow her the luxury of Spotify Premium without having to pretend to be in a family with her classmates.
× Jonathan Wu Jonathan is a member of the Reckoner's print board. His hobbies include photography and biking (and sleeping, but who doesn't like sleeping?). He is often found in the halls trying to find his next class, or wasting time playing Bridge with his friends. When Jonathan isn't busy studying for the next test, he is watching youtube videos endlessly or messaging on Facebook. If he leaves you on read he'll eventually respond. But you might have to wait 1 to 2 business weeks.
× Karan Minaeigharagouzlou Karan Minaeigharagouzlou is part of the Web and App Development Board of The Reckoner. He is a grade 9 student in the TOPS program who still wonders why he was accepted. His hobbies include programming, gaming, and occasionally making awkward social interactions. Above all, he likes proving his dominance through winning arguments about the most trivial subjects. If you ever see him, don’t try to pronounce his last name. Just don’t.
× Kelly Wang Kelly is a writer for the Lifeboard as well as an aspiring tone-deaf singer. When she’s not singing, she’s spitting fire bars. She colour coordinates her outfits with Silly Bandz because she’s still stuck in the early 2000s and you’ll often hear her randomly breakout in Chinese and Toronto slang (ironically of course) in an attempt to prove that shes’s actually great at it. When she is not pissing off her friends by saying anything along the lines of he a sweetermans, nize dat, and are u blem fam, she’s laughing at her own hilarious jokes because she’s so funny.
× Larissa Long If you’re looking for Larissa Long, just follow the stream of tears coming out of a movie theatre and you’ve reached your destination. With her loud and obnoxious laugh, you’ll hear her far before you even see her. She’s just a child who happens to write for the Editorial board and more importantly, a master at pool. She likes using long words to make herself sound more adenophyllous, and of course, is a spelling champ. She can even spell long words like cammel! With her inability to wink and hoops longer than TTC wait times, Larissa truly never gets cold.
× Laura Gao Laura is a way overly ambitious kid despite lacking some common sense, and would often commit herself to too many projects then scramble last minute to finish them. She’s always trying to tell jokes but she makes everyone cringe, every single time. Apart from fretting over failed attempts at socialization, you'd often find Laura running at 6 am, sleeping on the TTC, polishing her cadet boots, and most importantly, writing Editorial articles for the Reckoner.
× Laura Lu Laura Lu is a photographer for the Reckoner. Often described as a child at heart, she certainly doesn’t fail to live up to that title (in looks and in personality). Some of her favourite things to do include jumping in big piles of leaves, streaming old Nickelodeon shows and watching sunsets. With a love for going on adventures, you’ll always find her happiest outdoors, surrounded by people. One day, she hopes to explore the world with her two future dogs, a backpack and her camera.
× Lucy Qi Lucy Qi is a grade 9 news writer and illustrator at the Reckoner. She enjoys playing volleyball, drawing, playing piano, and texting people on Messenger at 4AM. When she isn’t consumed in homework or eating cup noodles, you can find her mindlessly scrolling through her Instagram feed or going on a long run in her neighborhood.
× Mahnoor Irfan Mahnoor is a member of the Print Development Board at The Reckoner. She spends everyday like it's her birthday. She can be overly cheerful and enthusiastic at times. Her spare time is spent binge-watching TV shows and complaining about having no spare time *Insert rolling eye emoji*. Her all time favourite hobby is sleeping, which she deprives herself due to her very unfortunate habit of procrastinating, but still peculiarly manages to get all her work done. Additionally, She has a huge obsession of collecting old coins and hopes to make a fortune out of them one day.
× Maimuna Akhter Maimuna Akhter is a member of the Outreach Board at The Reckoner. In attempt to be optimistic, she is looking forward to her future, but may change her mind in a couple of minutes. Maimuna is currently unemployed, half-asleep, and changing her mind. Her hobbies include drawing imperfect circular geometric spirals, attempting to bake, biking, and crocheting. She is quite amicable, except when sleep-deprived. The optimal amount of sleep for her ranges from 12-15 hours.
× Maryam Mobashir "Maryam Mobashir is a writer for the Reckoner's Editorial Board. She is usually sleep deprived because of her extremely busy schedule and her tendency to stay up late reading. In her free time, she can be found immersed in a book, watching an episode of Suits or staring blankly into space occupied with her thoughts, oblivious to the world around her."
× Matthew Liu Matthew is an artist in the Life Board. When he's not making bad jokes he's being one himself. He can often be seen in the halls wearing scrunchies and he always seems to leave his phone in the library. Matthew is also unbelievably stingy. He will come up with the worst ideas for saving money, like drinking bubble tea with a small straw to save the tapioca for next time. Matthew is horrendously outrageously unacceptably terribly bad at writing long long long long pieces, which is why he is using this sentence to fill up space. (echo) (echo) (echo)
× Michael Li Michael Li feels nervous as he begins coding for The Reckoner. Although he is an experienced programmer, he sometimes forgets when to use or remove semicolons when writing code. In fact, he even mixes up punctuation in English; Other than programming, he also enjoys getting incredibly lucky on the Euclid contest, his TOPS Physics courses, and the popular game Greed Control on the website Art of Problem Solving. When he is not doing these things, he prefers to spend his free time mourning over the death of his English mark.
× Miranda Zhao Miranda Zhao is a news writer for the Reckoner. While stuck in traffic on the 925, she likes to stare out the window and pretend that she can make the other cars disappear. However, because she is an ordinary person, this trick never quite works. Like most ordinary people, she enjoys music, eating rice at breakfast, sleeping in, eating rice at lunch, not having homework (haha), eating more rice at dinner, and the sound of the rain on the rooftops at night. If you see her in the halls, she’s probably contemplating what she’ll eat for her next meal (hint: it’s rice)
× Mohamed Dasu Mohamed is a writer for the editorial board at The Reckoner. He managed to grow a beard in Grade 8, and many adamantly insist that he has supernatural testosterone levels. No, he is not a reincarnation of Chuck Norris. He does, however, often convince himself that he is the definite reincarnation of Pablo from The Backyardigans. Mohamed loves baking, reading, and playing with his feline baby. He loves learning new languages - in fact, he can currently speak five. And he continues to hone his ability to say "I can't speak your language" in pretty much every other language he encounters.
× Nelson Lee Nelson Lee is an Outreach and Editorial member at Marc Garneau CI. Whether it is discovering cheap fries at Costco or inventing the perfect test-shredding machine, Nelson likes going on adventures and delving into exciting issues. When Nelson stumbles upon people who devote their energy to something bigger than themselves, his eyes may tinker from discovering something so spectacular. If Nelson isn't in bed by eight reading bedtime stories to himself, he spends his time stuck in the SAC Office trying to shoo away magical faeries.
Nicole Peri Kologlu
× Nicole Peri Kologlu Nicole Kologlu is a Grade 10 Editorial Board writer. She spends half of her time dozing off and the rest telling the 12-year-old boy living in her head to shut up. She tries her best to learn new languages, but her list of "Languages to Learn" gets a little bit more intimidating every day.
× Nisha Iqbal Nisha Iqbal is a member of the News Board and the Outreach Board at the Reckoner. Nisha spent the first 13 years of her life in Chicago and is a PROUD American. In her spare time, she loves to eat, and lose herself in books. Once she picks up a book, she probably won’t put it down till she is finished. She is known for being an energetic and outgoing person and of course, her obsession with Iced Capps.
× Nishtha Patel Nishtha Patel is a TOPS student and is part of the Outreach and Web and App Development Boards for her freshman year. She loves to dance, play around, joke and annoy her sibling. However, when it comes to hard work, she is dedicated, focused and reliable. He favourite sports are volleyball and gymnastics, as she does the competitively. Being the little nerd she is, her favourite subjects are math, science and gym. Also, don't forget, she loves food! Nishtha is a nice, funny, caring person and is very excited to be part of the Reckoner this year.
× Ray Hang Ray Hang is the quirky dude in the Print Development Board in the Reckoner. In his natural habitat, he can usually be found making bad jokes and generally being friendly with just about everyone. He's perpetually happy and has interests in just about everything. Don't let him near the cookie jar.
× Rena Liu Rena Liu is a Grade 10 News Writer for the Reckoner. In her free time, she enjoys falling asleep, reading, playing cards, studying, reading more, and listening to music. If you see her in the library at 8:15 in the morning, she will probably be half-dead and unresponsive.
× Sajda Zahir Sajda Zahir is a member of the Life Board. You’ve probably seen her crying in the halls about never getting anything done; it’s usually because she’s too busy binge-watching short crime films and taking naps. Despite the very long hours of sleep she gets, she always has permanent eyebags under her eyes. Most of the time you’ll find her reading a novel twice the size of her hands, or smiling like a maniac while daydreaming about dropping out of school and starting a bagel business.
× Sarah Ali Sarah Ali is a writer for the Editorial Board. She enjoys writing about rising technologies, social and human rights issues, and less important miscellaneous topics. She spends most her time at least twenty Wikipedia pages deep into a topic that will most likely never come up again in her life. She can often be found aimlessly wandering the halls and crying in the corner of the geography hallway. There are many things she likes, and many more she does not like. She wishes to someday have a cat that can soothe her incessant weeping.
× Serena Meng Serena Meng is a member of the Print Development Board at The Reckoner. When she’s not stuck on the 925, she likes to play with her cat, go down intense Wikipedia rabbit holes, and try to learn languages that she’ll never actually be able to speak. And despite lamenting that “there’s no time for anything,” Serena always seems to lose track of time strumming funky chords on her guitar or wasting hours figuring out unnecessarily complex origami models. If you ever need her, just message her on Facebook and she’ll probably respond within 12 business days.
× Serena Poonwalla Serena is a member of the outreach and editorial boards. She enjoys watching superhero movies on repeat and one day aspires to be one herself. If you see her in the halls, don't be afraid to say hi, she would love to meet you!

× Stephie Liu Stephie Liu is an author for the News Board at the Reckoner. She is currently in grade nine. Her hobbies include reading and spamming emojis to her friends on Facebook. × Sumedh Dhanvanthry Sumedh Dhanvanthry, a Grade 10 writer for the Life Board, might seem like a seething, vitriolic xenophobe with awful opinions. He might, perhaps, seem like a creatively barren student with a terribly skewed moral compass. His arrogance and his entitlement may seem to be in constant competition to break new ground. He might make you wonder, “Who let this guy go outside?” Maybe you wanna punch him in the face. But be warned: He’s actually a pretty nice guy. Give him a nod in the hallways. Maybe he’ll convince you that Cars 2 is the best movie ever made.

She usually gets really absorbed in the moment while she's doing something she likes, so sorry if she doesn't reply to your texts right away. She hopes that she can write meaningfully for The Reckoner.

× Tina Wei Tina Wei is a writer for the Life and Editorial boards at The Reckoner. She is funny (on some occasions) and deprived of sleep (on most occasions).
