40% of Canadian Seafood Found to have Fishy Labels

A report by the Guardian, released 15 March, alleges “seafood fraud happening on a vast global scale.” The investigation analyzed 44 studies from more than 30 countries conducted within the past three years, finding that 36% of sampled seafood products were mislabelled. Canada had one of the highest rates of fish mislabelling, at 41%. Most incidents involved replacing a more expensive fish with a cheaper one, for which the report blamed fraud and even “fish laundering”. [Guardian] [By Kevin Wang]

The US plans to send 1.5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Canada

——————————-

The White House has said that the US plans to send approximately four million doses of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine that they aren’t using to Canada and Mexico. On 18 March, White House Press secretary Jen Paski confirmed that the US has seven million “releasable doses” of the vaccine “available”. Biden has been pressured by allies to share vaccine doses, especially of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Officials said that they are working on plans to lend 2.5 million of them to Canada. This comes as the UK cleared the vaccine, although the UK’s drug regulator is looking deeper into a possible connection between the vaccine and blood clots in the brain. [CBC News][By Emily Ma]

Premiers say Atlantic bubble 2.0 expected to begin by April 19

——————————-

On Thursday 18 March, the Council of Atlantic Premiers announced that round two of the Atlantic bubble is expected to begin by 19 April. The bubble would allow people in the four Atlantic provinces to travel freely without requiring self-isolation. The council has said, though, that the opening of the bubble depends on COVID-19 numbers and the advice of Atlantic Chief Medical Officers of Health. However, following a spike in cases during February, Newfoundland and Labrador’s participation in the bubble “is conditional on continued progress in easing its provincial alert-level restrictions”.
