To celebrate the end of their 2015-2016 season, the MGCI Boy’s Varsity SELECTS team played a friendly match on 31 May 2016. The two teams, “Blue Squad” and “Lime Squad”, each consisted of half the team members, and were selected by captains Justin Lee and Morris Chen. To maintain the friendly spirit of the match, substitutions occurred every five minutes.
After a light warm up, the teams began their match.
For the first half, possession switched between the two teams quite evenly, both of them getting a couple of shots at the net. Captained by Justin, the Blue Squad even scored, but the goal was discounted due to an offside.
“It’s been a very enjoyable game [so far],” commented Frederick Ngo while he was off the field.
Roughly before half-time, the Blue team obtained one goal, due to a rebound off of the Line Squad’s goalie. From there, the Blue Squad’s possession increased, and Line Squad found it more difficult to carry the ball up the field.
The first goal after half-time was scored by the Line team, due to an empty net and an absent goalie. By the second half, players were slightly more lethargic, and the pace of the game changed from one of quick-offensive passes to one that was more strategic.
At the end of the game, the score was tied at 3-3, but a penalty shoot-out gave the Blue team a 5-4 win, ending the MGCI SELECTS team’s final game of the season.
When asked about the game and the overall season, Morris Chen commented that “the captains friendly was a great game to conclude the school year and set the stage for leadership in varsity soccer for the years to come.”
