Students are probably counting the days before march break, eager for a break from bustling school life. However, MGCI’s MIST team is counting down for a very different reason.
Hidden behind the acronym for the Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament (MIST) is a series of competitions geared towards high school students all across North America. Featuring over 35 different topics, the tournament spans Islamic art and poetry to even basketball and debate. The program aims to encourage and showcase leadership, creativity, and talent while promoting a deeper understanding of Islamic culture.
MGCI will be present at the regional tournament on 15 March, competing against other schools in the GTA. They will be competing for a spot to represent Toronto and Canada at the annual National Tournament that will take place later in the year. Hamza Shahid, a member of the MIST team, said that the competition “is going pretty well right now” and is confident in MGCI’s chances this year.
He also explained that despite the main tournament taking place during March break, many “small, pre-MIST competitions” are currently underway. For example, the example of MGCI’s “MOST MYSTFIED PHOTO”, where schools compete for the most likes on their team photo. He added that “MGCI is 2nd place” in the competition”, and encourages students to support the team.
