Marc Garneau’s Boy’s Selects and Girl’s Varsity Soccer Teams attended a soccer tournament on 23 and 24 April, 2015. The tournament was held in various soccer stadiums across Toronto, beginning with a round-robin within the various pools, and then gold, silver, and bronze playoff games.
The Boy’s Selects played their first game on the morning of 23 April at the Cherry Beach Soccer Field against East York C.I. Despite playing fiercely, the team lost 0-4. They then had two more games, losing both to very strong teams.
The boys also faced an injury with one of their defenders during the third game; a tackle caused the player to break his leg. But, despite the challenges, the Selects team managed to advance to the bronze quarter-finals at the Lion’s Park Soccer Field on 24 April, where they lost against Weston Collegiate Institute with a score of 2-3.
The Girl’s Soccer Team began their tournament on 23 April at Cherry Beach as well. With only three people in their pool, the girls played two consecutive games against Senator O’Connor College School and W. A. Porter Collegiate Institute, winning the first game 3-2, and the second 3-0.
The girls then advanced to the gold quarter-finals, and played against St. Michael’s on 24 April, losing to them with a score of 0-3.
“It may have ended in a loss, but it was a competitive game.” commented the Girl’s Soccer Team’s captain, Michelle Nyamekye, “Despite having to play without a chunk of our players, we were able to hold it together and play our best.”
The Girl’s Team has their first game of the season on 27 April, 2015 against Forest Hill C.I., and they hope the tournament has made them more comfortable with each other, and prepared for a good season.
The Boy’s Selects Team has one final tournament coming up on 30 April – 1 May, where they will go to Niagara Falls and compete in a two-day tournament.
0-4, 2-3, 0-3: Scores are NEVER written this way in soccer. The bigger number ALWAYS goes on the left.
“The team lost 0-4”. Instead write: “The team lost 4-0”. This implies that MGCI scored 0 goals and the other school scored 4, since MGCI lost. 4-0 is proper form.
