The annual Grade 9 barbecue took place on 16 September 2014 at 11:40 pm. After receiving their tickets from their teachers, all the students were called down to the back field to enjoy some free outdoor music, hot dogs, soda, and other snacks. “This is an important event for the new students,” said Mrs. McIsaac, the coordinator for the event, “Coming into high school is a big step, and we put a lot of focus onto the first year. Things like this barbecue help encourage the new students and drive their ambition. This event is solely for Grade 9s, just like the Grade 9 dance later this year.”
This is the third consecutive year that the Grade 9 barbecue and the Grade 9 dance have taken place.
“It’s important that the new students see all these volunteers from older grades helping out with the event and acting as role models,” said Maria Kashif, President of Student Council.
Students seemed to have a great time, with plenty of smiles on their faces and laughter in the air. “The food is good and the atmosphere is good,” said Nicole Kouroupis, a Grade 9 student, “The line was a bit long but we got lucky with that.” The Grade 9 dance is set to take place later in the semester.
