The Reckoner is the award-winning student newspaper of Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. During the school year, The Reckoner publishes regularly on its website and produces a monthly printed newspaper which is distributed to the school community. The organization is comprised entirely of dedicated student volunteers: some of the best writers, artists, photographers, designers, and developers of the school. Editor-in-Chief

Varun Venkataramanan is a Grade 12 student who loves going on runs as long as his last name. A big music fan, he likes to pretend he is the frontman of the Grammy-winning band Varoon 5. Although spring is his favourite season, it normally involves him crying over the Washington Capitals' latest playoff failure or Derrick Rose's next knee injury. Other than that, Varun can usually be found curled up with a book, coding out a new project, or playing with his luscious locks.

Director of Web and App Development

Adam is a senior at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. He is in the TOPS program and its notorious AP Physics course so he does not have time to eat much ice cream. Adam loves to aggregate nonsensical ideas into some useful manifestation. He enjoys the small things in life like not failing on an AP Physics test and snails. There is no way to connect these ideas in a meaningful way. Back to university applications.

Anthony is the Director of Print Development at the Reckoner. His work, hobbies, and pretty much his entire life revolves around a computer—from graphic design, to photography, to programming, to aimlessly browsing Reddit—unless he's playing badminton, you'll likely find him staring at a screen. Make fun of his print meetings all you want, but as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, he's not sleeping until those photos line up perfectly. If you see him around the school, feel free to say hi, or listen to him complain about anything from the TTC, to homework, to friends reading his bio just to meme him.

Life Manager

Areeba Asghar is the Life Manager at The Reckoner. She finds her title quite ironic as she does not know how to manage her own life. Areeba is a skilled procrastinator and likes to drink coffee (1 milk, 1 sugar). She devours books and is currently obsessed with classics. Areeba is a true supporter of sad endings; in her opinion, the happily ever after days are long gone.

Frank Chen is the Outreach Manager for The Reckoner. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to Eminem, playing volleyball, and reading too much of his time away. Frank doesn't dislike many things, but he always reserves hatred for the one-and-a-half hour trek he is forced to make daily, causing his constantly tired state of being. However, to his friends' dismay, Frank is never tired when he is geocaching, where he will constantly drag others on his expeditions of exploration. If you're ever interested talking about Harry Potter, Rick and Morty, or donating to our <i>award-winning</i> newspaper, he's your guy.

“Never lucky” – Julien’s favourite catchphrase when things don’t go his way. You can probably guess that writing these post-deadline biographies and articles are all a product of bad luck. Because they are—duh. Currently at The Reckoner, he is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Manager. When he’s not scrambling to finish his late assignments, Julien can often be found cheering for the Vancouver Canucks to win the draft lottery, browsing subreddits for social experiment ideas, or witnessing another epic Fnatic comeback.

Matthew Tse is a photographer on the Media Board at The Reckoner. The only things that he loves more than traveling around the world and taking pictures, is eating Japanese food in Japan and “Ferrari Red” Ferraris. When he has nothing to do at home, he can often be found watching Big Bang Theory, vines, or clips from various late night shows. During the winter, Matthew can be found skiing and on Youtube fail videos because he wipes out a lot. Matthew has never written an article for The Reckoner because he can’t English.

When he's not procrastinating, you can find him deep in a Wikipedia article, staring into space, or engaging in a good old screaming match. Amy Chen is an Illustrator for The Reckoner. She is a lover of art and the beauty found in even the most commonplace activities. When not complaining about (and then procrastinating on) homework, she enjoys reading novels and watching movies where she is immersed in a world that is not her own. His obsession with composing music and creating digital art makes him unable to focus on the tasks at hand, but at least it makes him feel somewhat artistic. Angela Pang

Angela Pang is an Editorial Board Writer at the Reckoner. She is an unfortunate combination of a perfectionist and a procrastinator, and thus spends too much time deliberating on what to write and not enough time actually writing it. As an avid fan of all things Korean and everything Harry Potter, Angela can often be found screaming incoherently about those topics to her friends. In her spare time, Angela enjoys choreographing various dances with friends, attempting to harmonize, and failing to make macaroons. Caryn is a member of the life board at The Reckoner. She absolutely adores travelling, but be warned! Ask about any one of her trips, and you may find yourself snoring through her impressively lengthy descriptions. Perhaps for a safer and less painfully drawn-out narrative, try consulting her backpack: the practical residence for her humungous keychain collection. Charmaine Chang

Charmaine Chang is Lauren Chang's sister. Lauren is, in general, the insensitive sister. Lauren attended a workshop and got to use a power drill on an assortment of foam bones, and is now the proud owner of an assortment of foam femur, humerus and radius bones. Lauren has never cried at school. Lauren wishes that people would not send her articles that she has previously written for the Reckoner, because that was a different time and she was a different person. Conner is a grade 9 newbie in the Editorial Board. He hopes to find his purpose in life by writing, because he’s a misfit everywhere else. (Not that he’s much good at writing). Conner is super silly and tries to be social... Until you start talking to him. He then runs out of script and relies on crude body language to communicate. Conner is weird. Stay away from Conner.

Grace is a grade 10 writer for the Editorial Board. She is 10% cake, 10% stressing about how she ate too much cake and doesn’t want to do anything, and 80% optimistic about the quality of tomorrow's cake. Her day to day includes a frenzy of songs, panda videos, and waving at anyone and everyone. Katherine Ma

Katherine Ma is in Grade 11 and writes for the Life Board of The Reckoner. She insists on only writing on the subway ride home, and refuses to believe she is capable of writing elsewhere. When she is not writing or being keen while pretending not to be keen, she can be found eating cereal, saving pictures of Godiva truffles to her phone, harmonizing unconsciously, complaining about how she doesn't have enough plaid shirts, or eating cereal. She is very much a cat person, even though she's allergic to cats, and also enjoys eating cereal.

Laura Lu

Laura Lu is a photographer for the Reckoner. Often described as a child at heart, she certainly doesn’t fail to live up to that title (in looks and in personality). Some of her favourite things to do include jumping in large piles of leaves, streaming old Nickelodeon shows and watching the sunset. With a love for going on adventures to any place she possibly can, you’ll always find her happiest outdoors, surrounded by people. One day, she hopes to explore the world with her two future dogs, a backpack and her camera.

Lauren Liu

Lauren Liu is a member of the Outreach Board at the Reckoner. She enjoys listening to music, playing basketball, and playing the French horn. She is a hardworking person at heart but she can be a procrastinator at times. Besides school work and extracurricular activities, she can be found reading a good novel, eating yummy food, or watching many movies and television shows on Netflix in her spare time. In the future, she hopes to travel more often and learn more new things from experiences that are yet to come.

Leo Zhao

Leo likes showering and petting cats, but not at the same time. He does not like olives because they are disgusting. He pretends to read big books to feel wise and impress people. Leo is not witty enough to write something funny or interesting here, and for that he apologises.

Madhumita Nathani

Madhu is a Life artist and Print developer at the Reckoner. If you refer to her as "Madhumita", she most likely will hold a grudge against you for /at most/ 3.56 minutes (she really can’t stay mad for long). Do feel free to use alternative names such as "Madhufus" or "Ma-dude" or "Ma-douche", though. Madhu enjoys leaning on and sticking to people (she loves people!). When agitated, she uses phrases like "I will stab you", but do not be intimidated by this, or her height, for she is quite the small, vulnerable, loving child. Madhu hopes that one day, she will have tested out every Japanese pen that exists.

Marzan Hamid

Marzan is a writer at the Reckoner. She enjoys watching cooking videos for hours on end, pondering paradoxical theories and signing her name with permanent marker on practically every surface she can find. She owns a collection of many watches and glasses, many of which she never dares to wear. Marzan is a procrastinator by nature, but also a person with a great fear of failure. When she isn’t baking, cramming, or doodling, she is usually volunteering. She is always smiling and laughing about inside jokes with her friends, even if she is running on one hour of sleep (which is most of the time).

Megan Niu

Megan Niu is a grade 12 student on the Editorial board. In her opinion, the best part about the Editorial board is the meetings. She enjoys the passionate discussions and controversial issues. The deadlines? Not so much. She is always looking for music recommendations. So if you want to slip into her messages, send her some of your favourite songs and artists.

Mei Yi Niu

Mei Yi Niu is a News Board writer for The Reckoner. The list of the things she loves is short and exclusive: the buzz of big cities, fresh fields of grass, the warmth of autumn teas, late-night stargazing, standing in cold rain, the smell of new books, the number five. She also has the most insane sweet tooth. She hopes to someday be a posh French lady sitting in a posh French café reading a posh French novel eating posh French chocolate. In Paris, obviously. It probably won’t happen, but a girl can dream.

Molly Yu

Molly Yu is an illustrator for the Reckoner. She is particularly fond of cats and water - things that probably don't go together very well. You will often find her doodling kittens and geometric shapes with faces. When near large bodies of water, she has an urge to dive in and go for a swim. At a first glance, she seems to be calm and composed. As you get to know her, however, you unleash her hyperactive, kitten-like personality. She isn't great with directions and easily gets lost but she will always try to find her way.

Nelson Lee

Nelson Lee is an Outreach Board member at the Reckoner. He is the upbringing of crazy schools and crazy friends with the Gruffalo resonating with him very much. The constant reminder of food, towering friends, his silly behaviour and ingenious theory about pockets makes him the perfect candidate to start endless debates. In the end, his horrendous ideas of splitting CO2 into two oxygen atoms and one carbon atom to end global warming causes everyone to question his sanity. But when his bubbly bubble gets burst, don’t be surprised to hear even more great ideas and puns!

Rahim Dhalla

Rahim Dhalla is a writer for the life board at The Reckoner. Fascinated by different cultures and ways of life, Rahim loves to travel and learn languages. His hobbies/interests include playing guitar, reading, running, and eating Oreos. He has numerously been criticized with the overuse of “litt” but still says it whenever the opportunity presents itself. Rahim also really likes food. If he’s not eating something, he’s probably telling someone how litt something is.

Roger Li

Roger Li is an artist for the Life Board. Currently bored with his life, he likes to add creative flairs to what he does whenever possible. His most recent endeavour was to write a creative biography in under a hundred words. Roger gets many ideas, like rhymes, puns, or fancy language, and becomes too attached to all of them. He then tries to find a way to reconcile all of them into one, finding that a hundred words is not nearly enough for his endeavour. Feeling swamped by the ambitious task, he decides to leave it for another day.

Russell Ijaya

Russell Ijaya is a photographer and print developer at the Reckoner. He loves well-designed things, captivating visuals, and indulging in the art form known as “photography”. Whether it’s in the bustling city or the quietest of lookout points, you’ll often hear a camera shutter trailing right behind him. Otherwise, you’ll probably see him in an uncomfortable position looming over his laptop, either editing his shots or scrambling for the assignment due in an hour. But that doesn’t mean he’s not approachable - though more of an introvert, he loves a good DSC03784.jpgconversation. With coffee, but food works too.

Ryan Chang

Ryan Chang is one of the newest writers for the Editorial Board at the Reckoner. One of his most defining features is his most unreasonable height, standing at 186cm (6’1”) at the age of 14. Aside from his irregular proportions, he has a vast array of hobbies including, but not limited to: binging Game of Thrones, demolishing pringles cans, staring at blank documents determined to write something, and indulging in all the spicy gossip he can find!

Sadia Akbar

Sadia is a News writer for The Reckoner and despises birds and physical activity. In the rare instances where Sadia is actually awake, she loves wasting away her life watching TV shows or staring at her ceiling. If you speak to Sadia before noon, she will likely ignore everything you say and just nod.

Sarvesh Sivakumar

Sarvesh Sivakumar is a member of the Reckoner's Web Team. He enjoys Netflix, badminton, and watching random videos on Youtube. He loves learning about computers, always knows about the latest tech, and enjoys chess. He hopes to one day have a smart home because of his laziness to do chores. When he isn't doing homework, he is usually spending time with his family, talking about random topics with his friends, or coding for a side project.

Sophie Yang

Sophie Yang is an Illustrator for the Reckoner. She lives the hard life of a fangirl, which entails the unfortunate combination of a constant lack of sleep, being broke from buying songs and concert tickets, and having absolutely no social life. In the rare moments when you find her not ranting about one direction, she can be found making fan art, testing new cupcake recipes, or laughing at terrible memes. She will be friendly if offered free food, hears new music from her favorite band, or finds another joyful soul who shares her lousy sense of humour.

Tazik Shahjahan

When he was 3, Tazik was an ambitious young man set on becoming The Greatest Carpenter of All Time. Unfortunately, he lost his mallet, forcing him to re-evaluate his career goals. Now in Grade 11, Tazik is yet to find his raison d'être. Despite his inability to compose logical sentences that flow, Tazik is extremely grateful for the existence of Wikipedia. His day usually revolves around a finely-tuned blend of complaining about his grades, extolling the virtues of effective altruism, replacing Chrome with Firefox on TDSB computers, and editing the occasional Reckoner article that comes by his way.

Tina Ma

Tina Ma is a writer for the Editorial Board at the Reckoner. She spends most of her time eating cookies, trying to be cool, and pretending to watch the NBA (even though it’s just for Jeremy Lin.) She likes to play call of duty with her friends, but nobody likes to play with her because her reflexes are slower than erosion (18 deaths, 2 kills?) After being voted off, she often goes to play with her sister’s ukulele, and laughs at her own jokes because everyone else is busy being good at the game. Haha.

Tom Liu

Tom Liu is a Grade 10 writer for the News Board. His hobbies include going on runs, playing badminton, and mastering his Tetris skills. Though he likes doing things at a slow and relaxed pace, Tom is able to catch up on a season’s worth of Flash or Arrow in a matter of days. If you need to find him for whatever reason, Tom is probably either studying for last minute tests, working on last minute projects, or finishing his last minute Reckoner profile.

He is always trying to meet deadlines as he is an avid procrastinator. Umar also enjoys programming and he likes to volunteer to share this passion. He can often be found listening to music, reading or being lost on Quora. One day, he would like to meet his favourite actor, Rowan Atkinson. Umar is deeply interested in politics and technology and would like to get a piece published this year.

Wilson Wang

Wilson Wang is a sports-editorial writer for The Reckoner. You can often find him either binge-watching tv shows or finding other ways to waste as much time as possible. Maybe this is why he can’t hand in articles on time. Maybe it’s because his board manager is a monkey :^) . Either way, the articles get finished eventually. His manager sometimes asks him to write esports articles, which is a questionable choice given that his favourite team is Immortals (LUL). Perhaps one day Immortals will win something. If that happens, maybe Wilson will finally write a decent article. Both are possibilities in the future, but neither are likely. #IMTWIN
