I’m Nelson Lee and I’m running to be YOUR SAC President.

I’ve served as your Grade 9 Ambassador, your Grade 10 Representative, and most recently on the team behind this year’s pep rally. From FallFest and International Show, to our House Points System, I live and breathe school spirit. I have dedicated my life to this school for the past two years: leading and organizing events with plenty of early morning and late nights.

During that time, I’ve noticed so much of the untapped potential our school has. Instead of the bulletin boards that lie in dust, sheltering photos of students long graduated, we will have clubs and teams promote their activities, getting more students involved. Instead of having TVs that replay the same messages over and over again and an online presence that still thinks that dabbing is cool, we will keep our electronics relevant and up to date.

But let’s talk about the elephant in the room, the unspoken issue that has haunted Garneau for years: the washrooms. Constant clogs and blockages, stains from god knows where, and the lack of basic necessities like soap and toilet paper have moved the washrooms from a student complaint to a health and safety issue.

I’m still in Grade 10, I won’t be able to check out next year and leave the school behind. Whatever happens will affect my life just as much as yours. That’s why I’m still invested in this school, making it better, piece by piece, step by step.

We need a President with an eye for detail, not a head in the clouds. We need a President who can bring meaningful change, not just empty promises.

Pep Rallies. Clean Washrooms. Real, Meaningful Change. You ready for another LIT year? Vote Nelson Lee.

As we witnessed this year, the house colour system was implemented into MGCI, it was a step in the right direction to plant a seed of school culture and to revampt spirit, thus what I tend to do is to reinvent the house system. Furthermore, this will include new house colour names as well as the implementation of more athletic events and intramurals to get more involvement of students to compete amongst houses. We will also vamp up spirit by having more interactive activities with the student body as a whole through the medium of cafeteria games, and our classical donut eating contest. While that improves spirit, we will have our great interest also set on the much larger events of mgci, including our Christmas Show which needs improvement, the introduction of a new Iftar Traditional celebration and open up MGCI’s wider community to share in the festivities of breaking the fast. At the same time I will be looking to host more outdoor events at MGCI during the fall and summer months. We will have more pep rallies centred around the house colour system, including intramurals and more activities for everyone to engage in. The other policy which I would like to introduce will be the reorganization of the role of the chairperson, to be that of a SAC Watchdog, a member of the council who will receive additional responsibilities of being of aid to one of the convenors on their major events or will assume their position in absence or in the moment.

The 2018-2019 year will be a new start, and I hope to make this a very memorable yearfor everyone at Marc Garneau CI. I by no means see SAC as a group above everyonein the school; instead, we are serving you – the students! In this new year, I hope toopen more opportunities for everyone so they could make their high school years verymeaningful. This includes two volunteer fairs, a university and college fair, a jobsopportunity fair, and resume, cover letter, and interview workshops so students can gettheir job/position of choice. Spirit is something I’d like to build on in the next year, withone pep rally and grade assembly every semester. The idea of house colors will be builton next year, with names and mascots for each of the colors, which the students willdesign and vote on. Next year, students will get the chance to also design theirsweaters, which everyone will then vote on, so there is more participation from thestudent body. We will have open meetings once every two months and a “Tell us MGCI”online form so students could invariably provide feedback if they aren’t able to attendthe open meetings. This will also be a great way for SAC to learn more about what theclubs are doing and form collaborations for larger scale events. We will continue withthe club unhealthy food sales and have a club fair in the beginning of every semester sostudents could learn more about the various clubs in the school to become involved in.In May, we hope to hold a conference with speakers from different areas, such asmedicine, engineering, and business, to share their experiences with the students andinspire them to go into the respective fields. Lastly, there will be emphasis on mentalhealth and mental well-being with weekly quotes and support groups.

Assuming the role of Vice-President will allow me to make the changes to MGCI that will helpenhance it. There are three main plans I hope to execute next year along with general duties.First, as vice-president, I want to vanquish the disconnect between student council and thestudent body as much as possible in order to improve the unity and spirit in the school. Frombeing part of SAC as secretary this past year, I have realized that the more connected andfamiliar students are with their student council, the more engaging and amusing school events will become. I will offer all of my suggestions to raise the school spirit. I will work with the council to organize and host more events like the house colour pep rallies and spirit days. I will also ensure that SAC is introduced at each of its hosted spirit events and stays engaged with students on social media. Secondly, I hope to establish smoothness and fluidity in all SAC elections and recruitment processes. I will make sure that all promotion is done in multipleweeks leading up to the meeting deadlines. Awareness will be raised well in advance of elections to entice the maximum number of students and ensure that they have the time to diligently prepare to run in elections. I will aim to make the future council’s election as smooth and truthful as possible. Thirdly, I realize that one of my major roles will be to recruit and work with SAC’s Student Senate. I hope to establish the Senate as early as October-November. I will work closely with the senate on SAC’s extra initiatives. I will chair the senate and ensure that all decisions are taken wisely and all work is done in a timely manner so that SAC is helped.

Platform

Frank Hong is a Grade 11 student that is extremely excited for his senior year. Frank has extensive experience in student government and politics. He started volunteering in politics at the age of 9 and since then, has been on various student councils, including serving as the youngest Vice President of the TDSB Student Senate, helping represent 250,000 students across the city.

The main goal of Frank’s candidacy for Vice President is to improve the happiness of Students at Marc Garneau. He understands how high school can be very tough and sometimes draining and he wants the students of Garneau to have a better time during their high school years. In addition to the few events that SAC hosts currently, Frank hopes invite various important and famous people to speak to and meet students at our school, host more events throughout the year. Some of the events include a School Wide Olympics, more Basketball and Volleyball Tournament and movie screenings.

Frank also understands that SAC needs to listen better to students. SAC will be better when they collectively listen better. Frank plans to allow everyone to attend the first thirty minutes of every SAC meeting to everyone and have the ability to speak their minds at the end of the 30 minutes.

Athletics Convenor

My name is Takwah Ahmad and I believe I am a suitable candidate for Garneau’s Athletic Convenor next year. The reason I feel I would be suitable for this position is because I have a passion for sports. I have participated in a variety sports teams from a very young age. I love basketball, it’s my favorite sport. I have also received a trophy for MDP for the junior girls basketball team last year. I am confident that I have the capability to fulfill my responsibilities as Athletic convenor by organizing the Athletic Banquet, intramurals, and pep rallies. Some ideas i would like to propose is to try to add more events and/or tweaks into the intramurals and regular sports games such as adding a donation box to raise money for the Athletic banquet or prizes for intramurals. By attaining this extra money that I would potentially receive from the intramurals, I would lower the ticket prices. This way many more people would be willing to come and have fun! I would also encourage more girls to participate in intramurals and join sports teams and also motivate students to step out of their comfort zone and play freely amongst other students.

Running for Athletic Convenor, there are many qualifications that I personally possess that makes me suitable for this position. The first qualification would be that I am very organized; this is an essential skill needed as I will be putting together events. My knowledge on a wide variety of sports is another qualification because as Athletic Convenor, I will be involved with many different sports. I’ve worked alongside MGAA, volunteering my time to help score keep and set up many home games that has allowed me to become familiarized with the environment. With the potential ability of becoming Athletic Convenor, there are many plans that I would like to bring to our school. My goal as Athletic Convenor is to help and encourage the participation of students at Marc Garneau to become more involved with events taking place in the gym. For example, as a female athlete, I’ve noticed the lack of female participants and would love to boost more female involvement in the gym. Basketball is by far one of the most popular sports that students look forward to play. By planning and creating Garneau’s own March Madness (a popular basketball event), students are able to sign up, create their own teams to participate and play against others. Another popular event would be the All Stars. Garneau’s All Star game is another event that will include many activities that I look forward to make come alive. Some events could have a small fee for students to pay; proceeds earned will go towards the athletic department for new equipment, apparel such as jerseys, sweatshirts and pants and athletic banquet. With that in note, putting in the work as Athletic Convenor will be a great responsibility, as I have confidence in myself to strive to go beyond needed to fulfil this role.

As social convenor, my number one priority is student satisfaction. In the 2018-2019school year, my goal is to host a minimum of three dances. With each dance, I willincorporate aspects, such as themes, activities, and menus that are voted on bystudents. Activities, games, and contests will be worked into the night’s itinerary to makethe event more enjoyable and filled with constant entertainment. Collaboration betweenother SAC members, such as with the spirit convenor, will be included to combinedifferent elements of student council into one event.Quality is what makes an event memorable. I will put every ounce of effort into ensuringthat our dances are worth your time and money. Planning for each event will startmonths in advance. I will personally consult with venues, caterers, and DJs to ensurethat they adhere to standards. Having arranged services before for gatherings, parties, and family events, I know the ins and outs of planning – including the components ofbooking, how to budget, and what elements to prioritize.Plans for upcoming events will be showcased to the student body through social media. For transparency, a breakdown of ticket costs will be shown. This will help studentsvisualize where their money is being spent and how it contributes to the making of theevent.I would like to expand past the services typically used in the past. Being an attendee toprior events and listening to student feedback, frequently recurring topics that came upwere the lack of space, type of music, and quality of food. To combat this, fundraiserswill be held (if there is financial need) to afford better locations, entertainment, and foodwhile keeping ticket prices within a reasonable range.Throughout my term, I will remain open, honest, and sensitive to student input andconcerns.

For the past 3 years I have planned and participated in many community and social events through the city and province. My years of experience spent as a special Events Assistant with a family run events company has allowed me to have access to various suppliers and vendors, as a result I have built great working relationships and contacts with various suppliers and venues that will allow me utliize as a Social Convenor. As a student at MGCI I have been exposed to some of the most pressing issues facing our students today. I have come to the realization that there are a large number of students out there that need financial help to participate in events and as the Social Convenar I will make it my mission to ensure every student interested can afford to attend the social events organized. From managing deadlines and projects, to designing new templates for flyers and social media, my effective communication skills have given me a solid foundation on all aspects of organizing events.

Not only do I have the professional knowledge necessary to be successful in this position, but I also have excellent interpersonal skills and experience in customer service, working with a diverse population including organization members, executives, volunteers, event attendees. I am confident that my abilities and passion for events make me a successful and capable Social Convener. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you further to discuss my candidacy and qualifications.

Special Events Convenor

Kinza Yaqoob

Platform

I would like to run for special events convener for the student body of 2018/2019. This is a position I hope to have because International Show is the event of the year. Which I would love to take responsibility for. I believe that I have the capabilities to be a part of SAC next year these qualities include being responsible, and having time management. Having good time management is a necessity in overseeing International Show. The shows cost a lot and you must know how to properly budget and spend all the committee funding’s. With time management, also comes the funding which I promise if elected I will be running many different fundraisers and unique ideas for International Show to gain more funds. Of course, organizing an entire event is time consuming, but I will be forming a strong committee to run alongside me and help with all the fund raising and event planning. While all of this may seem a lot, I believe that I can withstand the pressure and be an amazing special event convener for the students and graduates of 2018/2019.

I plan on meeting the needs of the performers and exceeding the expectations of those in the audience. After dancing in Christmas Show and International Show for 2 years and taking leadership roles in the two most recent shows, I felt that I would be able to give Garneau the show that they want and perhaps more. This includes getting food and design planned out ahead of time and scheduling more rehearsals in order to increase the likeliness of having a smooth show. In addition to International Show, I’ll be introducing new traditions such as a senior trip, our very own Wildin’ Out tournament, and an Iftar Party to give the students more events to look forward to in the year. All these events were thought of to promote more spirit and to give more events for the students to look forward to. Lastly, it will be my initiative to dedicate April to multiculturalism as I plan on having spirit days to understand other cultures as well as promote the intercultural clubs. This includes having an announcement recognize certain cultures as well as cultural music play on certain days and spirit days where students wear a piece of their cultural clothing. All of these things will contribute to not only giving recognition to the diversity of our school, but also create a hype for International Show. All my promises shall be preplanned in order to ensure the quality of all the events.

Spirit Convenor

Nithya Uthayakumar

Platform
As Spirit Convenor, my number one priority is to get students involved in school activities. My goal is to increase the number of students AND teachers who participate in spirit events. I am aiming to hold more pep rallies throughout first and second semester than those that were held this year. I will be holding occasional events in the cafeteria such as musical chairs, cup stacking competitions, trivia, and a lot more. In order for more students to participate in these activities, I’ll be giving out prizes to motivate people to join. I also want to implement new spirit week themes because I know they can get quite repetitive and boring. I will work with the Social Convenor to bring more sub-activities to school dances. I believe I have the skills and experience necessary to become Marc Garneau’s spirit convener for many reasons. Firstly, I have experience running a club as I am the president of the ALS club which was initiated by me this year and has continued throughout the year. As president I have overseen our bi-weekly meetings, bake sales and fundraisers. Additionally, I have experience dealing out tasks for club members to do during the meetings and taking leadership in order to ensure everyone is updated on the newest upcoming events. Lastly, I have experience coordinating many events outside of school such as bbq party games, baby shower activities, birthday parties, etc. I am responsible, organized, committed, accountable, creative and enjoy taking the lead and planning events to get people active and participating.

My name is Ryan Chang and I’m running as your spirit convenor! This year at MarcGarneau, I was able to experience our amazing spirit events and would love to not onlycontinue making them amazing but also to improve them. I served as the grade 9representative this semester where I was able to work with our student council to planand run our many spirit events, so I’m certainly not lacking in any experience! What’sunique about me is that I will not only listen to your ideas on our school spirit but beable to implement it effectively and efficiently. For example, want to see more of ourschool-wide spirit pep rallies? I will do it! Want to see more students vs teachers? I’ll dothat as well! Another one of my focuses is improving our spirit days and spirit weeks.Spirit days have always been things we enjoy, but some of them are getting old…solet’s mix things up! Instead of wearing a certain outfit one day to show off your spirit, Isay we have an activity instead such as a game of basketball or a game of musicalchairs to show off your spirit and get your house colour points! Finally, I am going tocreate a reward system for our house colours! My idea is that the winning house willget a prize like free freezies, or a party thrown in the house colour’s victory. Perhapseven a banner or trophy dedicated in their honour! This way, you can get something inreturn for all the spirit you’ve shown! In conclusion, if you want an enthusiastic, responsible, and spirited person to not only listen to your ideas but actually put theminto action, then join my gang and vote for Ryan Chang!
