At the 2020 DECA Ontario Provincials, MGCI shattered their previous records by winning a total of seventy-nine medals and having twenty-seven Provincial Champions.

DECA is a business competition that is split into three levels: Regionals, Provincials and the International Career Development Conference (ICDC). This year’s provincial competition was held from 7-8 February, 2020. Members who previously qualified at the regional competition competed in roleplays and written exams. Among  the two thousand competitors at provincials, sixty-two students were from MGCI.

Like at regionals, competitors competed in three different types of oral events; principles, which is reserved for first-year competitors; individuals; and teams, which is done in partners. Within each category are smaller clusters focusing on various aspects of business such as finance, hospitality, or marketing. Students could also compete in written events, which consisted of a written paper and a prepared presentation.

The contestants wrote an online, multiple-choice exam on 4 February in school. These exams tested students’ knowledge in business vocabulary and facts related to their clusters. Students also competed in oral role plays at Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto. The competitors were given between ten to thirty minutes, depending on their event, to prepare a case study and another ten minutes to present it to a judge. These roleplays are based on real scenarios that happen in businesses and are used to test the competitors’ knowledge and communication skills. The competitors were marked based on factors such as creativity, speaking ability, and knowledge. Students competing in principles or individual events presented two roleplays, while students in team events presented one. Their roleplay and exam scores were then added together and the students with the highest overall scores qualified for ICDC.

Three awards ceremonies were held on 8 February, divided into different event clusters. Throughout the day, Marc Garneau students cheered on their fellow DECA members as they walked across the stage to receive their medals and plaques.

Miranda Zhao, a Grade 9 student who competed in the Principles of Business Administration event said, “While I’m sad my journey with DECA is over for this year, I’m really happy that I decided to sign up. It’s been a great experience and has helped me become closer to my friends and gain new skills. I’m also really grateful for the support I got from my friends and the execs.”

Though being in DECA requires countless hours of practice, unending dedication and hard work, most participants come out of it with valuable skills, experiences, and memories they’ll never forget.
